News Summary

Nutter, a leading law firm, announces the addition of 13 new attorneys, including five partners, to enhance its private wealth and estate planning services. The expansion strengthens Nutter’s leadership across key markets, including New York and California, and features talents from Hartog Baer and a new partner from Hawaii. Co-managing partners highlight a strong growth strategy, reflecting an industry demand for legal services as the firm exceeds average growth rates.

Boston – Nutter, a prominent law firm, has announced a major expansion of its legal services with the addition of 13 new attorneys, including five partners, effective August 4, 2025. This strategic move aims to strengthen Nutter’s core practice areas and enhance its leadership position in the private wealth and estate planning sector across the United States.

The newly recruited attorneys are strategically positioned across key markets, with locations in New York, Honolulu, and the San Francisco Bay Area. This expansion not only solidifies Nutter’s status as a leading bi-coastal practice but also bolsters its existing capabilities in real estate, land use, litigation, and intellectual property.

A significant part of this growth comes from bringing on nine attorneys from Hartog Baer, a full-service trusts and estates law firm based in Orinda, California. The team from Hartog Baer includes its namesake partners, Hartog and Baer, alongside associates and of counsel: Kevin P. O’Brien, Christopher D. Jew, Anthony G. Matricciani, Mary T. Nguyen, Amanda E. Sherwood, David Yu, and Ana M. Allec. They will continue to operate from the Hartog Baer office in Orinda, California, providing a seamless transition for their clients.

The expansion also includes Honolulu-based attorney Matsumoto, who joins Nutter as a partner in the Private Client Department. The combination of Hartog Baer’s California practice and Matsumoto’s presence in Hawaii is expected to significantly enhance Nutter’s Private Client Department, which has recently earned a Band 1 ranking from Chambers and Partners for its exceptional services.

In Nutter’s New York office, two new partners, Popin and Trainor, along with associate Jordana A. Garellek, have been added to the team. Popin and Garellek join from Duane Morris, while Trainor comes from Fenwick, specializing in intellectual property litigation, particularly within the life sciences sector.

The firm’s co-managing partner, Michael E. Scott, highlighted Nutter’s dedication to attracting top talent and delivering high-quality client service. Co-managing partner Liam T. O’Connell expressed confidence in the firm’s growth strategy amid an industry shift toward increased demand for legal services. Notably, Nutter’s growth rate of 8% in 2025 already surpasses the industry average of 2.7% for mid-sized law firms.

Nutter’s Private Client Department provides comprehensive advisory services on estate planning, estate administration, and trust administration, catering to a diverse range of client needs. The firm’s Real Estate, Litigation, and Intellectual Property Departments have also gained recognition for their expertise in navigating complex legal matters.

Reflecting its robust legal acumen, Nutter has been involved in over 330 acquisitions, secured more than 200 development approvals, closed over 260 leases, and facilitated around 180 real estate loans in 2024 alone. The firm is well-equipped to handle various asset classes, project types, and intricate real estate transactions with diligence and precision.

Moreover, Nutter’s intellectual property litigation capabilities cover disputes relating to patents, trademarks, trade secrets, and other significant areas of concern for clients engaging in IP-related matters.

Nutter’s proud heritage dates back to 1879, co-founded by former U.S. Supreme Court Justice Louis D. Brandeis, and the firm continues to build upon its strong foundation with this latest expansion of talent and expertise.
