Kailua – Construction is set to commence on September 29 for a new sewer connection line aimed at the Kailua Beach Park Ocean Safety District Operations Base Station. This project is expected to take approximately two to three weeks to complete.
This new facility will be the first purpose-built-base for the Honolulu Ocean Safety Department, serving as a vital hub for lifeguard operations between Mokapu Peninsula and Waimanalo Bay. The project includes several key components, such as the demolition and removal of the existing asphalt roadway, installation of a new sewer lateral connecting to an existing sewer manhole, and the eventual restoration of the roadway.
Construction will occur during limited hours, specifically from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m., Sunday through Friday, excluding holidays. During this time, a single lane closure will be imposed, and the public is urged to remain cautious in the area. Drivers are encouraged to obey all traffic controls, posted signage, and directives from special duty police officers stationed at the site.
The new base station will cover approximately 454,100 square feet and feature a building measuring 1,680 square feet. The facility will include two offices, a bathroom, a kitchenette, a board storage room, and two roll-up garage doors designed to accommodate truck and rescue ski storage. This structure will ensure that lifeguards have a secure location for storing critical rescue and medical equipment.
Although the original timeline for completing the facility aimed for summer 2025, it has been adjusted to July 2026 due to a redesign of a retaining wall. The total cost for the entire project is estimated at $2.5 million.
For any questions or comments regarding the construction or the new base station, the public can reach out to the City and County of Honolulu’s Department of Design and Construction at (808) 768-8400.
