Emergency response team working at construction site after trench collapse

News Summary

A construction worker tragically lost his life after becoming trapped in a trench in Goodyear, Arizona. The victim, a 44-year-old father, was buried under dirt, prompting an extensive rescue operation that lasted over 12 hours. Local authorities are investigating the incident, highlighting concerns over safety protocols in the construction industry. Friends and family mourn the loss, emphasizing the victim’s dedication as a parent and his positive influence within the community. This incident raises serious questions about safety measures that could prevent such tragedies in the future.

Goodyear, Arizona – A tragic incident occurred on July 29 when a construction worker died after becoming trapped in a trench at a site near 183rd Avenue and Lower Buckeye Road. The victim was identified as Ronald Andrew Baquera Jr., a 44-year-old father of two, who was buried under a significant amount of dirt during the incident.

The Goodyear Fire Department was alerted to the emergency at approximately 1:10 p.m., responding within six minutes. Initial rescue efforts were hampered by unstable ground conditions and sensitive underground infrastructure, including utility gas lines. Despite attempts by fellow workers to assist Baquera prior to the arrival of official emergency services, the situation grew increasingly dangerous as the trench continued to collapse.

To ensure the safety of the rescue team and prevent further accidents, responders shifted to a “more methodical recovery approach” after about 30 minutes. This involved securing the area, with the support of the Goodyear Police Department and the Phoenix Fire Department’s technical rescue team, as well as utility workers from APS and Southwest Gas.

After a grueling recovery operation that spanned over 12 hours, Baquera’s body was recovered around 2 a.m. on July 29. The prolonged rescue efforts underscored the complexity of the situation, particularly due to the risk of further collapses in the unstable ground.

In the aftermath, the Arizona Division of Occupational Safety and Health (ADOSH) has initiated an investigation into the incident. The findings are expected to take four to five months before they are finalized and made public. Local authorities, including the fire and police departments, extended their condolences to Baquera’s family, friends, and coworkers during this difficult time.

Baquera’s family expressed profound shock and grief at the loss, highlighting his passion for family activities and devotion as a parent. According to reports, he was well-liked among his peers, further emphasizing the impact of this tragic event on the community.

The incident raises serious questions about safety protocols in the construction industry. An industry safety expert noted that such accidents could often be prevented with adequate training and the use of proper shoring equipment. This incident is part of a concerning trend in Arizona; reports indicate that at least three other individuals have lost their lives in construction-related trench collapses since 2019.

Rubicon Companies, which assisted in the recovery efforts, clarified that the deceased worker was not employed by them or their subcontractors, ensuring a clear delineation of responsibility in this case.

This construction site, where the tragedy unfolded, is located in a developing neighborhood characterized by new single-family homes under construction nearby. The local community has expressed their sorrow over the incident, highlighting the importance of safety in similar environments where numerous workers and businesses collaborate.

The ongoing investigation will aim to uncover the specific circumstances surrounding this incident, with the potential for recommendations to improve safety standards in the construction field moving forward, ultimately striving to prevent future tragedies of this nature.
