Tire tracks damaging greens at North Shore Golf Club

News Summary

A recent vandalism incident at the North Shore Golf Club in Vienna resulted in significant damage estimated at $20,000. Co-owner Robert Caione discovered tire tracks and destruction on the greens, attributed to an ATV being driven recklessly. The club will continue its scheduled tournaments despite the challenges, and a $2,000 reward is being offered for information leading to the vandals’ arrest. The incident has raised community concern about the preservation of local recreational spaces.

Vienna, N.Y. – A vandalism incident involving an ATV has resulted in approximately $20,000 in damages at the North Shore Golf Club, a historic venue that recently celebrated its 100th anniversary. The incident occurred over the weekend, with significant destruction noted when co-owner Robert Caione discovered the damages on Sunday morning.

Specifically, two of the club’s nine holes suffered substantial harm, with deep tire tracks marring the greens. Video footage from a nearby property reportedly captured an individual operating an ATV and performing donuts on the same night as the vandalism, leading Caione to suspect that the person seen in the footage is likely responsible for the damage to the golf course. Additionally, another video has surfaced showing a similar vehicle traversing the golf course.

Following the incident, the owners of the North Shore Golf Club, Robert and Cathleen Caione, expressed their dismay at the destruction, noting that some areas have been severely torn up and that repairs could take until the end of the following year to complete. The visibility of tire tracks from the damage might persist for up to two years.

Despite the extensive damages, the club intends to proceed with hosting its pre-scheduled tournaments. The maintenance costs for the greens amount to nearly $15,000 annually, which makes the recent vandalism particularly concerning for the owners and the community. The Caisones, who became co-owners of the golf club in July 2023, take particular pride in the quality of these greens, emphasizing their importance to the golf club’s reputation and value.

To encourage the public’s assistance in identifying the person responsible for the damage, a reward of $2,000 is being offered for information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the vandals. The Oneida County Sheriff’s Office is actively seeking tips from the public and urges anyone with relevant information to contact them at 315-765-2725.

This vandalism incident adds to the challenges faced by golf courses and recreational facilities, which often struggle to maintain safe conditions and preserve their landscapes in the wake of such disturbances. The North Shore Golf Club, being a historic locale in Vienna, plays an essential part in the community’s social and recreational life, and the significant damages could have lasting repercussions on its operations and community engagement.

The recent events have highlighted not only the physical impact of the vandalism but also the importance of community vigilance in preserving and protecting local establishments. As the investigation continues, the hope is that community support will lead to the apprehension of those responsible and the restoration of the golf course to its original condition.
