With significant investments in fire safety, including support for the local fire department, and a focus on affordable housing initiatives for low-income families, the funding aims to bolster the welfare of the community. Additionally, the tour highlighted leadership changes at local institutions, showcasing ongoing commitments to community development and service enhancement.

New York— On July 9, New York State Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie and Assemblymember Patrick J. Carroll announced over $2.1 million in state funding dedicated to community enhancement projects in the Village of Haverstraw. This funding aims to improve safety, security, and the overall welfare of families living in the community.

The funding announcement highlighted several key projects, including a significant investment in fire safety and affordable housing initiatives. Heastie remarked that the Village of Haverstraw exemplifies the positive impact of continued investment in local neighborhoods. The officials toured important sites including the Haverstraw-Ossining Ferry Landing and the local fireboat, which plays a critical role in community safety.

Fire Safety Enhancements

A substantial portion of the funding, amounting to $650,000, is allocated to support the fireboat’s river patrol and for mutual aid efforts involving neighboring fire districts. Additionally, an extra $350,000 will support the Haverstraw Fire Department—an all-volunteer force—allowing for the purchase of new firefighting equipment.

Affordable Housing Plans

In line with the state’s commitment to expanding affordable housing, $1 million in funding has been earmarked for a proposed project by Westhab. This initiative plans to construct 81 affordable housing units specifically aimed at assisting low-income families in the area. The officials visited the planned site for this new facility, underscoring the urgent need for more affordable housing solutions in New York State.

Community Services Support

The tour also included a visit to The Haverstraw Center, which serves as a hub for various community services, including youth and family support. The center provides access to a food pantry, recreational activities, counseling, educational programs, and a summer camp tailored for families in need.

In support of these community efforts, Heastie announced an additional $140,000 in funding, which will cover costs for the summer camp for all participants during this summer and the next, thereby ensuring that community youth have access to vital summer programming.

Leadership Changes at Local Institutions

Amid the funding announcements, it was also highlighted that Scott Guevin will assume the role of Chief Executive Officer at Helen Hayes Hospital, starting May 12, 2025. Guevin brings over 25 years of experience in hospital administration and rehabilitation, with expectations set for him to further enhance the hospital’s reputation for care.

In another leadership update, Bailey Burke has been named the new Interim Director of the Hudson Valley Venture Hub at SUNY New Paltz. Burke has nearly a decade of experience in the regional entrepreneurial ecosystem, previously directing the New York Business Plan Competition and contributing to Upstate Capital for eight years, which aids in strengthening the network of local entrepreneurs.

The Hudson Valley Venture Hub has achieved notable success, recognized as a top Growth Accelerator by the SBA, having had a multi-million-dollar economic impact in New York State over the past two years through significant investments and job creation initiatives.

This recent funding and the supportive initiatives underscore New York State’s commitment to improving community infrastructure, safety, and housing while fostering economic growth and opportunities for families and individuals across the region.
