Evansville – A series of drunk driving incidents over the weekend led to multiple arrests in Evansville, Indiana, highlighting concerns over impaired driving in the area. These incidents involved drivers displaying various signs of intoxication and resulted in injuries and property damage.

On Saturday night, 48-year-old Albert Spencer was apprehended for driving under the influence after he drove through a construction zone on the west side of Evansville. Spencer struck several construction cones, with one cone becoming lodged under his vehicle as he continued down the road. A deputy discovered him on the shoulder of University Parkway, where officers noted he exhibited signs of impairment, including slurred speech, watery eyes, and a strong odor of alcohol. Spencer registered a blood alcohol content (BAC) of .211 during a breath test conducted at the scene. Additionally, he was driving with an expired license and now faces charges for driving while intoxicated, endangerment, operating a vehicle with a BAC of .15 or more, and driving while suspended. Spencer is currently held on a $1,000 bond.

Additionally, earlier that same day, a 25-year-old Evansville man was arrested following a drunk driving crash around 12:03 p.m. in the 900 block of Powell Avenue. When police arrived, they found a woman trapped in her vehicle as the other driver had initially fled the scene on foot. However, the suspect returned shortly after police arrived and showed clear signs of impairment, including glossy eyes and slurred speech. Officers discovered several empty beer cans in the man’s vehicle. He was booked at Vanderburgh County Jail on preliminary charges of operating while intoxicated and leaving the scene of an injury crash. His bond has been set at $2,000. The current condition of the injured driver remains unreported.

In another incident, 51-year-old Howard Lane Jr. was arrested after crashing into a dumpster while attempting to leave a bar parking lot. Officers observed erratic behavior in Lane’s Dodge Charger, including turning signals that were intermittently activated while stationary. As police approached, Lane backed into a dumpster and attempted to flee, prompting an officer to use a patrol car to block his vehicle. After being stopped, Lane exhibited signs of intoxication and later tested a BAC of .159 at Vanderburgh County Jail. He is currently facing charges for driving under the influence and operating a vehicle with a BAC of .15 or more.

Evansville police have also commended a good Samaritan who intervened to stop another potentially dangerous situation involving a driver with a BAC of .40. This incident occurred on Saturday, June 21, at around 3:43 p.m. The driver was reported for reckless behavior, including nearly colliding with several vehicles before the Samaritan removed the keys from the ignition. When officers arrived, the driver showed signs of impairment and was taken into custody, subsequently hospitalized overnight due to severe intoxication levels. This individual faces preliminary charges of operating while intoxicated with a prior conviction, as well as operating a vehicle without ever having received a license. No further details about the driver have been disclosed by police.

The recent uptick in drunk driving incidents serves as a reminder of the ongoing issue of impaired driving in Evansville. Law enforcement continues to advocate for safe driving practices and urges the community to report suspected drunk drivers to prevent further incidents.
