Downtown Merced construction site affecting local businesses

News Summary

Local businesses in Downtown Merced are struggling economically due to ongoing construction in Bob Hart Square. Owners report significant financial losses as access to shops becomes increasingly difficult, with delays in project completion adding to their frustrations. While the city emphasizes the need for revitalization due to population growth, business owners express concerns over inadequate communication regarding the construction’s impact and updates. New businesses are set to open in the area, but the current climate poses challenges for established merchants as they navigate decreased foot traffic and customer accessibility.

Merced businesses are facing significant challenges as construction efforts continue in Bob Hart Square, a central hub in Downtown Merced. The area has been under construction for several months, leading to difficulties for customers trying to access local shops and resulting in substantial financial losses for business owners.

Tany Vega, owner of Shop Barber Shop located on Canal Street, highlighted the impact of the ongoing construction, noting that customers have increasingly used back entrances to reach shops due to inaccessible main entrances. Despite businesses displaying ‘open during construction’ signs, many have reported losses amounting to thousands of dollars.

The construction project, which was initially scheduled for completion in October, has now been delayed to early November. The necessary improvements include installing a new 16-inch water line and a 12-inch storm drain system, as well as adding two new driveways, updating crosswalks, and implementing seating planters. This extensive construction stems from Merced’s population growth of over 16% in the past five years, prompting the need for revitalization in the area.

Mayor Matthew Serratto underscored the project’s importance, emphasizing that it is critical to meet the growing city’s needs. Despite the expected long-term benefits of the revitalization, local business owners have expressed frustration regarding insufficient communication from the city about construction updates. A recent letter sent to a group of around seven businesses provided limited information, leaving many shop owners concerned and considering legal action due to ongoing financial losses.

In the midst of the construction, exciting developments are also on the horizon for Merced. Several new businesses are set to open, including popular names like Chick-fil-A, Poki Bowl, and Sahara Coffee House. Additionally, the Hilton Garden Inn and a Raising Cane’s restaurant are slated to join the city’s growing array of offerings, alongside new retail options at the Marketplace at Merced, such as Boot Barn, Burlington, and Petco.

The anticipated opening of the Hub Merced, a multi-purpose facility designed for UC Merced students, will also add various dining options to the landscape. City officials have indicated that Burlington Coat Factory is expected to open on October 10, with more businesses in the Marketplace at Merced aiming to be ready for the upcoming Christmas shopping season.

The construction disruption in Bob Hart Square remains a point of contention for local merchants, as they navigate the challenges posed by decreased foot traffic and customer accessibility. While the completion of the revitalization is awaited, the immediate concerns of business owners highlight the complexities involved in urban development and the importance of effective communication from city officials.
