News Summary

The Detroit Red Wings are gearing up for the new NHL season, focusing on building from last year’s strong performance in scoring efficiency and power plays. With standout statistics from players like Lucas Raymond, Alex DeBrincat, and Moritz Seider, the team aims to enhance its play while addressing challenges from underperforming veterans. The contributions of both emerging talents and established players will be crucial as they prepare for a competitive season ahead.

Detroit, MI – The Detroit Red Wings are gearing up for the 2025-26 NHL season, showcasing strong individual performances and significant advancements in several key statistics from the previous year. As the team looks to build on last season’s successes, particularly in power plays and scoring efficiency, the contributions of both established players and emerging talents will be crucial to their ambitions.

Last season, the Red Wings ranked fourth in the NHL for midrange goals, netting a total of 88 goals from this category. Notable contributors included Lucas Raymond and Alex DeBrincat, with Raymond tallying 17 midrange goals to tie for fourth place, while DeBrincat’s 15 goals placed him ninth overall. This scoring surge was complemented by a remarkable shift noted after the hiring of coach Todd McLellan on December 26, during which the Red Wings led the league with a power-play percentage of 30.2%.

Individually, Lucas Raymond emerged as the top scorer for the Red Wings, achieving a career-high of 80 points throughout the season. His impressive offensive metrics included a 45.6% offensive time percentage (89th percentile) and an even more notable 64.9% on the power play (97th percentile). Notably, Alex DeBrincat led the team in total goals with 39, which included 13 power-play goals tied with team captain Dylan Larkin.

Dylan Larkin’s contributions also stood out, as he recorded 13 power-play goals and excelled in several performance metrics. His statistics highlighted 20-plus mph speed bursts of 234 (97th percentile), a total skating distance of 274.26 miles (99th percentile), and 80 high-danger shots on goal (95th percentile). Larkin additionally scored 21 high-danger goals, positioning him just outside the NHL’s top 10 for that category.

On defense, Moritz Seider has emerged as a foundational player for the team, boasting remarkable statistics across the board. Seider ranked in the 80th percentile or better at his position for eight different metrics, including a top skating speed of 22.88 mph (90th percentile) and a total skating distance of 291.30 miles (99th percentile, fifth in the NHL). His offensive contributions also included 31 midrange shots on goal (91st percentile) and 74 long-range shots (89th percentile).

In goal, John Gibson, newly acquired, averaged a save percentage of .912 across 29 games. He ranked second in the NHL in long-range save percentage at .990, indicating a promising potential for improvement, especially as he strives to bounce back from a challenging period with the Anaheim Ducks, where he recorded sub-.900 save percentages over the prior two seasons.

Despite their strengths, the Red Wings are also cognizant of the need to address underperforming veterans. Justin Holl, a depth player, played a substantial 73 games and accumulated 1,079 minutes on the ice. While he contributed with 35 hits and 78 blocked shots (ranking fifth on the team), his record of 66 giveaways significantly impacted his overall performance, resulting in a minus-20 goal differential.

As the team embarks on preparations for the coming season, they are looking to leverage the positive contributions from younger players like Marco Kasper, while also finding solutions for areas that require improvement. Building on last year’s successes and addressing challenges will be pivotal as the Red Wings aim for a significant impact in the upcoming NHL season.
