Doster Construction will manage the project, which includes new facilities like a satellite library and police operations building, alongside renovations to existing structures. With a phased approach to various projects, the city aims to enhance community resources while supporting public safety and connectivity through additional initiatives like a pedestrian bridge over Highway 31.
Vestavia Hills City Council has officially approved a significant construction initiative, allocating over $30 million for multiple facilities and infrastructure upgrades at the Sicard Hollow Athletic Complex and surrounding areas. Doster Construction has been selected as the construction manager for this extensive project, which is set to unfold primarily in Liberty Park over the next two to three years.
City Manager Jeff Downes confirmed that the plans encompass an array of new facilities, including:
- A new satellite library along Sweeney Hollow Road.
- A police operations building.
- A public works and park maintenance building.
In addition to the new buildings, renovations and expansions are planned, such as:
- Expansion of Fire Station No. 4.
- Demolition of the existing park maintenance building at the Liberty Park softball fields.
- Reconfiguration of the back entrance to the softball park.
- Construction of an access road to connect the new library, police, and maintenance buildings.
Doster Construction will also oversee the installation of a pool heater at the Vestavia Hills Aquatic Complex located at Wald Park. The city intends to stagger the construction projects to help manage costs effectively.
The timeline for the projects indicates that the expansion of the fire station, installation of the pool heater, and construction of the access road are expected to start in fiscal 2026. Meanwhile, work on the police facility, satellite library, maintenance building, and the reconfigured softball park entrance is anticipated to kick off in fiscal 2027.
Doster Construction was chosen from a shortlist of six companies and will earn 1.75% of the overall construction cost, which translates to an estimated $535,000. In addition, they will receive a minimum of $15,512 monthly during the pre-construction phase, along with billing rates for supervisory personnel.
Mayor Ashley Curry expressed confidence in Doster’s capabilities, citing competitive pricing and the quality of personnel assigned to the project.
Further enhancing the city’s infrastructure, a separate project is underway for a pedestrian bridge over Highway 31. This initiative aims to improve access and enhance safety between Wald Park and the city’s public library. The pedestrian bridge is projected to cost approximately $3.2 million, with the Alabama Department of Transportation contributing 80% of the funding.
Moreover, a project for sidewalk enhancements and road widening on Massey Road has recently encountered delays due to the discovery of an unmarked water main. This project includes the installation of a 5-foot-wide sidewalk and the necessary repaving of the road, with an expected completion date in the summer.
This array of construction and infrastructure improvements underscores Vestavia Hills’ commitment to enhancing community resources and public safety, with various projects designed to serve the needs of residents for years to come.
