Major Road Closures in West Palm Beach for Train Track Repairs

Construction at Palm Beach County intersection with road closure signs

News Summary

West Palm Beach is facing significant road closures as CSX undertakes repairs on deteriorating train tracks at a key intersection. The repairs will affect around 50,000 drivers during the school year, with a completion goal before students return. Detour routes have been recommended by the Florida Department of Transportation to ease congestion. Local residents express concerns about increased commute times, and traffic management measures are being implemented to handle the situation effectively.

West Palm Beach, Florida – Major road closures and detours began on Monday as CSX undertakes significant repairs on deteriorating train tracks at a key intersection. The extensive repairs are anticipated to impact approximately 50,000 drivers during the school year. Officials aim to finalize these repairs before students return to classes on August 11. This undertaking is part of a larger effort to enhance the safety and reliability of the region’s transportation infrastructure.

Senior project engineer Mel Pollock stated that a considerable amount of progress was achieved over the weekend, including the demolition of the existing rail across the affected intersection. Trains were able to resume running on the newly repaired tracks starting Saturday. Alongside the rail enhancements, the overhead gantry system used for signalization was also dismantled over the weekend, clearing the way for the new installations.

The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) has recommended two main detour routes to help manage the anticipated congestion:

  • From Seminole Pratt Whitney Road to Orange, Okeechobee, or Southern Boulevards, connecting to Military Trail.
  • From Coconut Boulevard and 60th Street to Okeechobee Boulevard, then linking to Military Trail.

Typically, around 30,000 drivers are affected by closures at this intersection during the back-to-school season, and with the repairs coinciding with the start of classes, that figure is set to swell to 50,000. Pollock has emphasized the importance of careful planning and effective communication with residents given the limited detention options available.

The necessity for these repairs arose from concerns raised by CSX regarding the condition of the train tracks and issues stemming from differential settlement that poses a risk to train safety. Inspections revealed significant deterioration of the underlying railroad ties, prompting immediate action.

The project is currently proceeding as scheduled to meet the August 10 deadline — a mere day before schools in Palm Beach County and the Treasure Coast are set to reopen. In a related development, Northlake Boulevard is slated to close at 8 p.m. on Friday for a span of 9 days to facilitate CSX’s upgrade of its rail crossing. This closure is expected to overlap with already ongoing construction and detours at the Seminole Pratt Whitney intersection, potentially exacerbating traffic situations in the area.

Additionally, the county is managing further closures and lane reductions on Seminole Pratt Whitney Road due to separate widening efforts that are not related to the Northlake Boulevard project. Local residents have expressed growing concerns about the likelihood of increased traffic congestion and the impact it may have on their daily commutes.

In response to these challenges, Palm Beach County officials have created a dedicated web page to keep residents informed about road construction activities and provide live traffic camera feeds. To mitigate the expected congestion, traffic engineers are set to adjust traffic light timings at critical junctions throughout the area. Moreover, the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office, alongside other law enforcement agencies, will oversee traffic management to maintain order during the upcoming closures.
