Six exemplary students from Buckeye Local High School have each been awarded $1,000 scholarships by the Mt. Pleasant High School Alumni Organization. The recipients include Brady Kalman, Adam Blackwell, Lydia Boyd, Addie Erwin, Shane Griffith, and Austin Blake. This initiative highlights the organization’s commitment to supporting the educational pursuits of deserving local students.

The annual Mt. Pleasant High School Alumni Banquet is scheduled for August 2 at the Homestead Event Center, where additional scholarships and awards will be presented.

Community Events and Support

In addition to scholarship distribution, the Barton Volunteer Fire Department continues to play a crucial role in community engagement. They have been actively involved in numerous community events, fostering a sense of unity and safety.

However, the department responded to a tragic incident on Friday morning when firefighters discovered a woman deceased in her burning home located at 808 Allegheny St.. Investigations are ongoing to determine the cause of the fire.

This year has seen a significant uptick in severe storms impacting the area, raising concerns among residents and authorities alike about safety and preparedness as the frequency and potency of these weather events have increased.

Scholarship Awards and Community Partnerships

Separately, the Rotary Club of Steubenville concluded its annual scholarship presentation on April 16, awarding multiple students with its esteemed Service Above Self scholarships. Among the recipients were Zachary Kuntz from Edison High School, Gordana Vein and Aubrey Duggan from Steubenville High School, as well as Addison Erwin and Shane Griffith from Buckeye Local High School, and Andrew Rohde from Catholic Central High School.

This initiative was made possible through funding partnerships between the Rotary Club and IBEW Local 246, which organized a golf tournament and secured a grant from Rotary District 6650.

Members of the Scholarship Committee, including Alan Hall, Barry Gullen, Michael Mehalik, Charles Joyce, and Kathy Musso, played an integral role in the selection process. Notably, Christina Frey, a past scholarship recipient and former teacher at Pleasant Hill Elementary School, was also in attendance.

Upcoming Events

Looking ahead, the community can look forward to the 20th-annual Concert on the Hill, which is set to take place on August 24 from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., promising an evening filled with entertainment and camaraderie.

Furthermore, several local churches have announced their sermon topics for upcoming Sunday services, ensuring an array of spiritual enrichment opportunities for community members.

On a lighter note, the Town and Country Ladies Golf League recently convened on July 10 for a meeting focused on medal play, showcasing camaraderie among local women golfers.

In academia, Kent State University awarded degrees to its spring graduates, marking significant milestones for students and their families. Additionally, two sisters have won consecutive Best of Show awards at the Midland Arts Council Summer Gallery, highlighting local artistic talent and achievement.
