New York City – John F. Kennedy International Airport is set to transform its travel retail experience with an exciting new initiative at the New Terminal One, designed to feature a vibrant selection of travel essentials along with products from well-known New York brands and local businesses. This new initiative comes as part of a large-scale redevelopment aimed at enhancing the airport experience for travelers. The project has brought together key partners, including the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, Unibail-Rodamco-Westfield Airports, and WHSmith North America.

The retail spaces within the new terminal will encompass approximately 8,400 square feet and will include six curated areas focusing on both global and local brands that embody a New York ambiance. Travelers can expect to find iconic names such as Made in Queens, Magnolia Bakery, Jacques Torres Chocolates, and Greyston Bakery. Additionally, numerous locally crafted goods will be showcased, including:

  • Granola from Queens-based Baked by Noon
  • Soap from Treestar
  • Cookies from Brooklyn Bites
  • Coffee from Transcendence Coffee
  • Art from Johnnerdraws
  • Drinks from Red Jacket Juices
  • Brittle from Brittle & Beyond
  • Caramels from Cobblestone Candies

This innovative retail concept is rooted in diversity and community inclusion. The Port Authority’s Institute of Concessions (IOC) has played a crucial role in encouraging inclusivity among local businesses, with over 40 enterprises graduating from its program and becoming equipped to compete for airport contracts. Notable businesses contributing to this initiative include Beautiful Amore Skincare, Rincon Salvedoreno, and Brooklyn Blend. Additionally, Love From USA leads a business incubator focused on supporting disadvantaged business enterprises.

Unique retail concepts within Terminal One will further enhance the shopping experience, featuring:

  • WHSmith Travel Essentials: Open 24/7, providing curated travel basics.
  • The Canopy: Featuring high-quality luggage and travel accessories.
  • The Queens Borough Market: A blend of industrial design with natural textures.
  • Skybound by WHSmith: A fresh take on traditional travel stores.
  • The Last Stop: Designed to evoke the experience of a NYC subway car.
  • Las Artes Mercado: Combining New York fashion with modern bodega practicality.

The New Terminal One, valued at $19 billion, is set to be the largest terminal at JFK and is projected to be completed in phases by 2030. Upon completion, it will house 23 gates and more than 300,000 square feet of retail, dining, and lounge space. The terminal’s design emphasizes sustainability, featuring naturally lit spaces and cutting-edge technology.

This development is part of the JFK Vision Plan, which aims to transform JFK into a premier global airport. A significant focus of this redevelopment effort is the integration of local businesses, especially those owned by minorities and women. Community engagement, which includes input from the JFK Redevelopment Community Advisory Council, plays a crucial role in shaping the new terminal. The New Terminal One aspires to reflect New York’s cultural vitality, providing travelers with an immersive experience that captures the city’s diversity.

In addition to the focus on retail, a recent training program initiated by the Institute of Concessions aims to amplify the presence of local and diverse airport concessionaires during JFK’s ongoing transformation. This initiative signifies an essential step towards making the airport experience more inclusive and representative of the local community.
