News Summary

Oswego County has opened two new cannabis dispensaries, Leafy Wonders in Fulton and FlynnStoned in Oswego. This marks a significant expansion in New York’s legal cannabis market, which is experiencing growth with 713 licensed dispensaries operating across the state. FlynnStoned aims to provide a diverse selection of cannabis products and plans to launch a delivery service, while Leafy Wonders prepares for its first anniversary by giving back to local causes. As the market grows, the Office of Cannabis Management continues to ensure a regulated environment.

Oswego County has welcomed two new cannabis dispensaries, reflecting the ongoing expansion of New York’s legal cannabis market, which has shown remarkable growth despite facing numerous challenges since its legalization in 2021. The state legalized recreational adult-use cannabis through the Marihuana Regulation and Taxation Act and has been steadily working towards creating a robust regulated market.

As of December 31, 2024, New York has officially licensed 713 retail dispensaries, representing a significant increase in the state’s cannabis retail outlets. Out of these licensed dispensaries, 260 have commenced public adult-use sales, with more than half being less than six months old. This growth is particularly concentrated in urban centers like Manhattan, Queens, and Long Island, which have reported the strongest retail sales figures.

Among the latest entrants to the market are Leafy Wonders Cannabis Dispensary in Fulton and the FlynnStoned Cannabis Company in Oswego. Leafy Wonders is preparing to commemorate its first anniversary with a special event scheduled for May 18, 2024, and has plans to donate a portion of the proceeds to local causes. On the other hand, FlynnStoned officially opened its doors on January 3, 2025. Located on George Street, directly across from the Price Chopper plaza, FlynnStoned is projected to generate over $3 million in annual sales.

FlynnStoned aims to offer an extensive selection of cannabis products, approximately 500 to 600 different items including flowers, edibles, drinks, vapes, tinctures, topicals, and concentrates. This variety seeks to cater to diverse consumer preferences and enhance the shopping experience for customers. Additionally, the dispensary plans to introduce a delivery service for Oswego residents starting in February.

The adult-use cannabis market in New York has witnessed a dramatic increase in sales, jumping from $2.2 million in January 2023 to an impressive $133.3 million by November 2024. Total retail sales within the state’s cannabis market reached over $1 billion by the end of December 2024, with sales figures for 2023 amounting to $160 million, which surged to $869.4 million in 2024. By the end of 2024, nearly 300 dispensaries were operating across New York, with expectations for ongoing growth.

The Office of Cannabis Management (OCM) has been proactive in creating a healthy regulated market by targeting the illicit cannabis trade. In 2024, the OCM successfully closed more than 1,500 unlicensed storefronts to bolster the legitimate cannabis business sector. This enforcement strategy aims to support the thriving legitimate market while minimizing the impact of unregulated operations.

The partnership behind FlynnStoned includes owners Darrell Pfiffner and Natasha Glynn, who collaborated with Michael Flynn to establish the FlynnStoned brand while retaining full ownership of their Oswego location. Their objective is to provide a customer-friendly shopping environment with knowledgeable staff, thus enhancing the overall cannabis retail experience for consumers.

As New York adapts to the rapidly changing landscape of the cannabis industry, the establishment of new dispensaries like Leafy Wonders and FlynnStoned is a testament to the state’s commitment to creating a robust legal marketplace that can operate alongside a regulated and responsible retail environment.
