Interior of an opulent penthouse in SoHo, NYC

News Summary

Beatrice Folchi, a 24-year-old assistant to crypto executive John Woeltz, has been arrested on charges of kidnapping and torturing an Italian man in a SoHo penthouse. The victim endured weeks of torment aimed at extracting his cryptocurrency password. The incident highlights the darker side of the cryptocurrency world as both Folchi and Woeltz face serious charges amid ongoing investigations. Their affluent backgrounds emphasize troubling trends of wealthy individuals exploiting their resources for criminal activities, raising critical questions about safety and ethics in the digital age.

New York City – Beatrice Folchi, a 24-year-old assistant to high-profile crypto boss John Woeltz, has been arrested following allegations of kidnapping and torturing an Italian man in a luxurious SoHo penthouse. The apartment, which costs $40,000 per month, served as the site of a horrifying ordeal, with claims that the victim was imprisoned for weeks in an effort to extract his cryptocurrency password.

Folchi is facing serious charges of first-degree kidnapping and unlawful imprisonment. The Manhattan District Attorney’s Office has yet to make a final decision regarding prosecution in this troubling case. Originally from Latina, Italy, Folchi is noted for studying communication and philosophy at the University of Connecticut from 2017 to 2020. Her background also includes experience managing events for prestigious luxury brands such as Rolls-Royce, Bentley, Puma, and Manchester City.

The victim, identified as Michael Valentino Teofrasto Carturan, reported that his harrowing experience began when Woeltz lured him back to the United States on May 6. Once in New York, Woeltz took Carturan’s passport and began a brutal campaign of psychological and physical torture. Reports describe horrific acts, including binding the victim with electrical cords, electrocution, tasing, and pistol-whipping. Additionally, Carturan endured threats involving extreme violence, including being warned that he would have his limbs severed with a chainsaw.

The psychological torment was compounded with threats against Carturan’s family in Italy, as well as being implanted with an Apple AirTag to monitor his movements. Carturan managed to escape the penthouse after Woeltz allegedly declared it would be his “death day.” He is currently recovering from his sustained injuries at Bellevue Hospital.

John Woeltz, aged 37, is characterized as a Kentucky-based entrepreneur with a net worth estimated at $100 million. He has also been charged with multiple offenses including assault, kidnapping, and criminal possession of a firearm, following the recovery of a gun at the scene of the crime. A relative of Woeltz has publicly declared his innocence, claiming that he is a victim of manipulation in a larger scheme involving others.

Upon her arrest, Folchi was spotted denying her involvement in the incident while carrying a designer Stella McCartney bag. She indicated her intention to have her lawyer handle any further comments. An investigation into the case continues, with law enforcement looking for at least one additional suspect believed to be connected to the alleged criminal activities.

Background information suggests a troubling trend involving wealthy individuals leveraging their resources for criminal activities in the world of cryptocurrency. While both Folchi and Woeltz have their backgrounds intertwined with the luxury and elite status associated with the cryptocurrency market, this incident highlights the potential darker side of this rapidly developing industry.

Authorities remain vigilant in their investigation as they sift through the complexities of the case, balancing the rights of the individuals involved with the pressing need to ensure justice is served. The implications of this case extend beyond the immediate charges, raising questions about the safety and ethical lines crossed in the pursuit of wealth and status in the digital age.
