LinkNYC kiosk supporting small businesses in NYC

News Summary

New York City is stepping up its support for small businesses through the LinkNYC advertising initiative, which aims to enhance visibility for nearly 200,000 local enterprises. With significant economic contributions and employment numbers, the 2024 launch of LinkLocal provides crucial advertising opportunities, supporting thousands of small businesses and fostering a thriving entrepreneurial ecosystem. The city is also hosting the second annual NYC Small Business Month Expo to further celebrate and connect these local businesses.

New York City is enhancing support for its small businesses through the LinkNYC advertising initiative, which aims to boost their visibility in a competitive marketplace. As of 2023, the city hosts nearly 200,000 small businesses, a record in NYC’s history. These entities contribute significantly to the local economy, generating an estimated $250 billion annually and employing around 1 million workers.

The LinkNYC project plays a pivotal role in this initiative by operating over 2,200 kiosks throughout the city. One of its standout features is LinkLocal, a free advertising option specifically designed for small businesses in underserved neighborhoods. In 2024 alone, LinkLocal provided over $4 million in complimentary, high-visibility advertising to more than 1,300 small businesses and community organizations. This level of exposure has been likened to the impact of a Times Square jumbotron ad for 3.5 years, with LinkLocal ads having garnered nearly 800 million views since their launch in 2017.

Given the challenges many small business owners face in today’s hyper-digital economy, such visibility is crucial. Many express concerns about keeping pace with digital trends and competing against larger corporations. Through City services, entrepreneurs gain access to vital digital tools that help manage orders, accept payments, and enhance business operations.

In addition to the advertising support, the New York City Department of Small Business Services (SBS) has formed partnerships with organizations like Mastercard’s Center for Inclusive Growth and Goldman Sachs, leading to the establishment of the NYC Small Business Opportunity Fund. This fund is noted as the city’s largest public-private partnership aimed specifically at supporting small businesses. Furthermore, collaborations with Next Street have led to the creation of the NYC Funds Finder, which serves as an online marketplace for financial assistance tailored for small enterprises.

To help small businesses thrive, SBS conducts monthly training sessions, webinars, and digital marketing workshops aimed at educating entrepreneurs on best practices and available resources. Through these efforts, the agency seeks to sustain partnerships that foster digital access and empower small businesses toward growth and sustainability.

The larger vision of this initiative is to build a more resilient and inclusive ecosystem for small businesses in New York City. By ensuring that urban entrepreneurs have the tools and support necessary to succeed, the city aims to reinforce its status as a hub of innovation and cultural diversity.

As part of its ongoing commitment to small businesses, the city has also announced the second annual NYC Small Business Month Expo, scheduled for May 29. This expo is expected to further celebrate and support the vibrant small business community across the five boroughs, promoting networking and connecting entrepreneurs with essential resources.

Overall, New York City’s LinkNYC advertising initiative and associated support programs underscore the government’s dedication to nurturing its small businesses, ensuring they continue to thrive in the ever-evolving economic landscape.
