Interior of the new psychiatric emergency program at NYU Langone, Brooklyn

News Summary

NYU Langone is set to launch a new psychiatric emergency program in Sunset Park, Brooklyn. This program will quadruple the current capacity for treating mental health crises, featuring a spacious facility planned with 12 beds for acute care and 5 for extended observation. With a budget of $7 million and additional support from the state, this initiative aims to significantly enhance mental health services in the area. Construction is expected to begin by the end of the year, marking a crucial step in improving emergency psychiatric care.

Brooklyn, Get Ready for a New Psychiatric Emergency Program!

In an exciting move that’s set to benefit those facing mental health challenges, NYU Langone is gearing up to kick off a brand new psychiatric emergency program, also known as a CPEP, at its hospital in Sunset Park. This innovative initiative comes in response to a state-led effort aimed at enhancing treatment facilities for individuals grappling with mental health crises.

Transforming Emergency Mental Health Services

The new program, which carries an impressive budget of $7 million, is all set to take over the hospital’s existing psychiatric emergency department. To get the ball rolling, an application for a certificate-of-need was filed last week with the Department of Health. This is not just an expansion; it’s a complete transformation of the way psychiatric emergencies are handled in the area, and it’s about time too!

With a spacious 3,200-square-foot facility planned, this new CPEP is designed to drastically improve the current setup. Right now, NYU Langone’s psychiatric emergency department operates with just four beds tucked away in the general emergency room. This limited capacity means that on any given day, psychiatrists can only see between eight to twelve mental health patients. But with the new CPEP, those numbers are set to change dramatically!

A Major Boost in Capacity

The anticipated boost in capacity is nothing short of remarkable! Upon completion, NYU Langone’s psychiatric emergency capacity will reportedly quadruple. The new program will boast 12 beds specifically for acute mental illnesses and an additional five for extended observation. This dedicated space allows for patients to receive up to three days of monitoring, offering a safe environment for individuals who need immediate attention.

Since the establishment of the CPEP model back in 1989, there has been a significant uptick in the number of hospitals across New York State implementing these much-needed facilities. Currently, there are 23 operating CPEPs in the state, providing round-the-clock emergency services like crisis intervention and thorough psychiatric assessments. This model is beneficial not just in treating patients but also in helping hospitals effectively manage admissions and referrals to outpatient care.

State Support for Mental Health Initiatives

Governor Kathy Hochul’s ambitious $1 billion mental health plan is also lending a hand, with $39.1 million earmarked for the construction of nine psychiatric emergency rooms, NYU Langone included. The Brooklyn hospital will receive $5 million in capital funds in addition to $1 million designated for operational costs as part of this significant initiative.

When the new program opens its doors, it will play a vital role in increasing the total number of psychiatric emergency programs in New York State to 31. Given the rising need for mental health resources, this expansion can’t come soon enough!

Looking Ahead

Plans are already in motion, with construction set to begin in the last quarter of this year. This development at NYU Langone in Brooklyn marks a significant stride towards addressing the urgent need for enhanced mental health services in the community.

Everyone knows that mental health is just as important as physical health, and having accessible emergency psychiatric options can make a world of difference for individuals when they need help the most. As the new CPEP takes shape, Brooklyn is poised to lead the way in providing critical support for those facing mental health challenges. So, let’s keep our fingers crossed for this fantastic initiative!
