New Callen-Lorde health center in the Bronx

News Summary

Callen-Lorde, a key provider of health and social services for LGBTQ New Yorkers, is set to open a new health center in the Bronx by summer 2024. The facility, located at 555 Bergen Avenue, will replace the current clinic and improve healthcare access for the LGBTQ community. This expansion comes as the organization addresses significant healthcare needs, aiming to provide a more equitable environment for marginalized populations in the area.

Bronx – Callen-Lorde, a key provider of health and social services for LGBTQ New Yorkers, is expanding its Bronx health center with a new facility set to open in summer 2024. The organization has signed a long-term lease for a 17,200-square-foot space located at 555 Bergen Avenue in the South Bronx, replacing its current clinic at 3144 Third Avenue, which is situated approximately half a mile to the north.

The new site will enhance access to healthcare for the LGBTQ community in the Bronx, as it is strategically located at “The Hub,” a commercial center where multiple thoroughfares converge. This prime location is expected to facilitate better access for both patients and staff, addressing a significant need for expanded services in the area.

According to real estate research company CoStar, the rent for the new building is estimated to be between $33 and $40 per square foot. The projected lease value for the new site falls between $568,000 and $688,000, although specific terms of the lease were not disclosed by Cushman & Wakefield, the firm that facilitated the deal. The landlord of the new Bronx location, JJ Operating Real Estate Investments, is known for owning multiple properties across New York City and New Jersey.

Current Facilities and Services

Currently, Callen-Lorde operates three facilities in New York City, including its flagship site at 356 West 18th Street in Chelsea and another location in Downtown Brooklyn. In 2023, Callen-Lorde reported a revenue of approximately $1.8 million, primarily generated from program services. However, the organization faced a financial challenge, with expenses exceeding income by nearly $400,000 that same year.

Callen-Lorde holds various city subcontracts for essential services, including counseling, care coordination, HIV services, and harm reduction for crystal methamphetamine users. These services have established the organization as a vital resource in the community, addressing both healthcare and social needs among LGBTQ individuals.

Impact and Future Plans

The expansion of the Bronx health center is anticipated to improve the quality of care and service delivery for LGBTQ individuals in the Bronx, allowing for a more equitable healthcare environment. The new facility is positioned to accommodate an increasing demand for services, reflecting Callen-Lorde’s commitment to enhancing healthcare access for marginalized communities.

This move follows a broader trend of organizations recognizing the unique health needs of the LGBTQ community, especially in areas like the Bronx, where access to culturally competent healthcare has historically been lacking. The transition to the new site is seen as a crucial step towards addressing this gap and ensuring that LGBTQ individuals receive the care they need in a supportive and affirming environment.

As Callen-Lorde works toward the completion of the new health center, the organization remains focused on providing comprehensive services and expanding its reach to better serve the Bronx community. With plans for an opening slated for summer 2024, Callen-Lorde is poised to enhance healthcare access and improve the wellbeing of LGBTQ residents in the area.
