Contractor Arrested for Embezzling Funds from Homeowners

Couple facing contractor issues at their home

News Summary

A Bullard contractor, Brian Christopher Glass, has been arrested for allegedly embezzling over $500,000 from homeowners during a construction project. Homeowners hired Glass to rebuild their home after a fire incident. Concerns arose when subcontractors withdrew due to non-payment. An investigation revealed that Glass misappropriated funds for personal expenses. The Smith County Sheriff’s Office advises homeowners to exercise caution when hiring contractors, emphasizing the importance of verifying business references and securing detailed quotes.

Bullard, Texas — A local contractor has been arrested and charged with embezzling more than $500,000 from homeowners during a construction project. Brian Christopher Glass, a 51-year-old resident of Bullard, faces serious allegations of misapplication of fiduciary property exceeding $300,000.

Glass was taken into custody on Tuesday and is currently held in the Smith County Jail. The investigation began after a couple reached out to the Smith County Sheriff’s Office in January 2025, detailing concerns about their dealings with Glass, who operates a business named Glass Limitless Homes and Designs.

The couple had hired Glass to rebuild their home following a severe lightning strike that caused a fire and destroyed their property. Between April and July 2024, they paid Glass a total of $518,206 for the construction work. However, they discovered in July 2024 that multiple subcontractors had abandoned the project, citing non-payment by Glass as the primary reason for their withdrawal from the job.

In addition to withholding payments to subcontractors, Glass requested extra funds beyond the agreed contract price, leading the couple to take action to continue the project. They started directly paying subcontractors and suppliers for building materials in an effort to ensure the work could be completed.

Facing mounting concerns, the couple chose to report their situation to law enforcement in November 2024. During the investigation, an investigator attempted to contact Glass by phone to discuss the allocations of funds. However, Glass refused to meet with law enforcement to provide explanations regarding the usage of the funds he had received.

Following an extensive review of the couple’s financial records, investigators confirmed that over $400,000 was allegedly misappropriated for personal expenses by Glass. These funds were purportedly used for personal enjoyment, including trips to casinos, leaving only approximately $115,989 for actual construction tasks performed by subcontractors and payments for necessary building materials.

In light of this troubling case, the Smith County Sheriff’s Office is advising homeowners to take precautions when hiring contractors. They emphasized the importance of checking business references and verifying if a contractor is registered with the Better Business Bureau. Homeowners are encouraged to request detailed quotes and obtained paid receipts for all construction materials throughout the building process, reducing the risk of falling victim to fraudulent activities.

Background Context

The construction industry has seen a rise in incidents of financial misconduct and fraud, particularly targeting vulnerable homeowners seeking repairs or renovations. Many homeowners may not be fully aware of the risks involved in hiring contractors, especially those who lack a reputable business background. The case involving Glass highlights the need for greater vigilance and due diligence in contractor selection.

According to officials, the warning signs can often be subtle but should not be overlooked. Homeowners are urged to ask for previous work references, check for appropriate licensing and registration, and ensure that the contractor is known within the local community. By adhering to these practices, homeowners can better protect themselves from potential fraud and fiscal mismanagement.

Glass remains in custody as further legal proceedings are expected to unfold. The sheriff’s office continues to investigate the extent of the allegations and is committed to protecting residents from similar incidents in the future.
