New York City – Fishs Eddy, a beloved retail brand known for its distinctive dishware, is preparing to launch its second store in New York City, specifically in the Dumbo neighborhood. The store, located at 81 Front St., is expected to open early next month and will cover a spacious 3,800 square feet.
The brand recently signed a 10-year lease with Two Trees Management, which highlights the company’s growth ambitions and commitment to the area. Fishs Eddy already operates a flagship store at 889 Broadway, near Union Square, where it occupies approximately 3,000 square feet.
The new Dumbo store is anticipated to attract both locals and tourists, similar to the foot traffic experienced at the flagship location. Customers can look forward to a variety of products, including ceramic mugs, dinner plates, mixing bowls, quirky shot glasses, landmark-shaped butter dishes, and retro diner logo glassware.
The commercial property at 81 Front St., where Fishs Eddy will set up shop, is a 12-story building that is currently around 85% occupied. The asking rents for spaces in this building range from $42 to $48 per square foot. Two Trees Management, which facilitated the lease, is also a tenant in the building, which boasts a total of 476,000 square feet and is situated near the iconic Brooklyn Bridge.
Alyssa Zahler, managing director of commercial leasing at Two Trees, mentioned that there is a strong synergy between Fishs Eddy and the character of the Dumbo district, which aims to combine upscale offerings with a focus on creativity and community. The Dumbo location will take the place of a retail outlet that was formerly occupied by the New Zealand-based clothing brand Rodd & Gunn.
Fishs Eddy has a rich history, having been founded in 1986. The brand has sold over 1.3 million of its popular “212 Skyline” dishes, which feature the New York City skyline. The company, now under the leadership of CEO Daniel Yadgard, who has been in the role for approximately a year, has a goal to expand its store presence and enhance its e-commerce strategies while re-establishing a wholesale presence.
Throughout its history, Fishs Eddy has faced various challenges, including a notable legal dispute with the Port Authority in 2014 concerning the use of Twin Towers imagery. While the company has previously operated multiple locations, including outlets on the Upper East and Upper West Sides, and “store within a store” concepts in Gracious Home outlets, it has had to close some of them over time. Julie Gaines, a co-founder of Fishs Eddy, emphasized that the brand has always had a strong connection to Brooklyn, indicating that the expansion into the borough was a natural progression.
With the opening of the Dumbo location, Fishs Eddy aims to enhance its brand presence while tapping into the surrounding community’s vibrancy and artistic appeal, signaling a new chapter in the iconic retailer’s history. The new store is expected to not only serve as a retail outlet but also as part of a broader effort to emphasize creativity, design, and the unique spirit of New York City.
