BROOKLYN, N.Y. — NYC Police Department officials announced Saturday the arrest of Sayed Mohassib, 27, on a murder charge in the Oct. 30 stabbing of Katie Suarez, 28, who was attacked while running along Shore Parkway in Brooklyn.
Mohassib had been working as a substitute school aide for the city’s education department after earlier service as an officer. Prosecutors also charged him with having a weapon and with disturbing evidence. Education officials said he is already off the job and would be dismissed if convicted. They declined to name his school and said extra help is being sent to that campus.
At a Saturday night hearing in Brooklyn Criminal Court, Assistant District Attorney Jordan Rossman said Mohassib offered admissions and that camera footage supports the prosecution. Rossman said investigators recovered blood evidence inside his home and that he stated he had tried to wash those marks away. Judge John McPadden directed that Mohassib stay in custody and receive no bail.
Suarez was wounded in the neck during that Oct. 30 evening run on the Shore Parkway path. Investigators have described the assault as random. She later died from the neck wounds.
Family members and detectives have said she was on her regular after-work jog when she was attacked. A nearby bank was her last stop before she changed into running clothes and set out. The arrest came about a week after the stabbing, and court papers described the top count as murder in the second degree along with the weapon and evidence counts.
