NEW YORK, N.Y. — Voters across New York City and the rest of the state are choosing a governor Tuesday. Democrat Kathy Hochul, the sitting governor, wants another full four years, and Republican Bruce Blakeman is trying to unseat her.

Polling places in New York open at 6 a.m. and stay open until 9 p.m. Voters can look up their assigned poll site, along with current wait times, before they leave home, and a complaint form is available for anyone who runs into a problem at the polls.

Early mail and absentee ballots sent through the mail must carry a postmark of Nov. 3 or earlier and reach election officials by Nov. 10 to count. People who still have one of those ballots can skip the mail entirely. Until 9 p.m., they can hand the ballot in at the county board of elections or at any polling place within their own county.

Blakeman is the Nassau County executive. Public polling heading into the final days favored the incumbent. A Siena survey released Oct. 28 had Hochul at 54% among likely voters and Blakeman at 40%, and a Marist poll put her lead at 11 points. Blakeman has pushed back on those numbers, arguing that his voters will turn out.

The race for governor sits at the top of the ballot, but it is not the only choice New Yorkers will make. Several other contests and decisions appear further down, depending on where a voter lives.

Across the Hudson, New Jersey polls close an hour earlier, at 8 p.m., and voters there are deciding a U.S. Senate seat as well as a tight congressional contest in the 7th District, which is drawing attention well beyond the state.
