Athletes participating in a workshop at the Athlete Immersion Program

News Summary

Fanatics has unveiled the Athlete Immersion Program, aimed at equipping professional athletes with essential post-career skills. The program covered topics such as business, entrepreneurship, and technology, with over two dozen athletes from various sports participating in workshops led by industry leaders. The initiative seeks to empower athletes to navigate their post-sports careers effectively while also creating networking opportunities and mentoring relationships. With an additional focus on financial literacy, the program aims to combat issues like financial insecurity among retired athletes.

New York City – Fanatics, a leading sports merchandising company, has initiated the Athlete Immersion Program designed to equip professional athletes with essential skills for life after sports. The program, launched in 2023 in partnership with Boardroom, recently saw participation from over two dozen athletes from the NBA, NFL, and NHL during the three-day event at Fanatics Fest.

The Athlete Immersion Program encompasses a comprehensive curriculum that covers business, entrepreneurship, technology, and networking, preparing athletes to navigate their post-sports careers effectively. Athletes, such as Cole Anthony from the Memphis Grizzlies, expressed that the program opened their eyes to various business possibilities.

During the event, participants attended workshops led by influential business leaders including Michael Rubin, the founder of Fanatics; David Solomon, CEO of Goldman Sachs; Josh Harris, cofounder of Apollo Global; Todd Graves, the founder of Raising Cane’s; Jimmy Pitaro, ESPN Chairman; and Rich Kleiman, CEO of Boardroom. This combination of guidance from seasoned professionals aims to provide a robust blueprint for athletes as they transition into business roles.

The program uniquely allows athletes to design their limited-edition clothing line with Mitchell & Ness, enhancing their creative skills while providing practical business experience. The curriculum includes interactive projects and case studies comparable to offerings in business school, adding a hands-on element that athletes find valuable.

Networking opportunities are a crucial aspect of the program, as emphasized by Fanatics Chief People Officer, Toretha McGuire. These connections can lead to beneficial collaborations and mentorships that are vital for career development. Todd Graves emphasized the importance of passion and a detailed understanding of business to succeed as an entrepreneur, highlighting the challenges that come with launching new ventures.

The Athlete Immersion Program is structured as a continuous learning platform, providing ongoing support and education beyond the initial sessions. A follow-up session is planned for December aimed at athletes from the WNBA, NWSL, and MLB during their respective offseasons, indicating a commitment to expand the program’s reach across sports and gender lines.

In light of concerns regarding financial insecurity among retired athletes, including a notable 16% bankruptcy rate among NFL players, the program aims to empower participants to enhance their financial futures. Former NFL player Aaron Donald stated that he hopes to build generational wealth for his children through the opportunities provided by the program.

To further bolster the initiative, Fanatics also introduced a new program called Chapter: Next which will focus on mentorship, panel discussions, and sessions with industry leaders. This initiative aims to complement the Athlete Immersion Program by deepening the educational and networking experiences athletes receive. The curriculum for Chapter: Next has been developed in collaboration with the University of Southern California, covering essential business concepts to further fortify participating athletes’ knowledge.

Participants in the Athlete Immersion Program have lauded the valuable hands-on experience and the chance to interact with Fanatics executives. Athletes such as Mark Melancon from MLB expressed eagerness about the training and connections made during the program, emphasizing the engagement with various sectors of Fanatics’ operations, including collectibles and loyalty programming.

Ultimately, the Athlete Immersion Program is designed not only to prepare athletes for successful second careers following retirement but also to create potential recruitment pathways for Fanatics. Michael Rubin reiterated the company’s commitment to helping athletes plan for their futures, framing this support as a corporate responsibility. Feedback from participants will be critical in enhancing future programs, with plans for an expanded scope that may include additional cohorts for NBA and NHL players.
