News Summary

The West Shore Business Improvement District (WSBID) in Staten Island is emerging as a crucial hub for industrial growth in NYC. Spanning 230 acres, it attracts diverse sectors including logistics and manufacturing, employing over 500 workers. The area offers financial incentives under its designation as a Brownfield Opportunity Area, encouraging businesses to relocate and expand. With ongoing efforts to enhance infrastructure and attract new investments, the WSBID is positioned to bolster the local economy and create more job opportunities for residents.

Staten Island – The West Shore Business Improvement District (WSBID) is positioning itself as a vital hub for industrial growth in New York City, responding to the rising demand for strategic locations by businesses in the tri-state area. Spanning 230 acres along Staten Island’s western shoreline adjacent to the Arthur Kill waterway and neighboring New Jersey cities like Elizabeth and Perth Amboy, the WSBID is being recognized as a prime destination for companies in various sectors including logistics, manufacturing, construction, and maritime operations.

The WSBID is managed by the Staten Island Economic Development Corporation (SIEDC) and is part of a larger initiative aimed at transforming Staten Island’s waterfront into a modern center for industry and innovation. Currently, the district boasts over 50 active industrial and manufacturing businesses that together employ more than 500 workers.

As demand for modern industrial facilities continues to rise, the WSBID is set to attract a wider range of industry prospects in the upcoming years. Among the anticipated future industries are data centers, offshore wind supply chain firms, advanced manufacturers, and supportive retail establishments such as coffee shops and grocery stores. This diversification of businesses is expected to enhance the local economy and create more job opportunities for Staten Island residents.

Unique to the WSBID is its designation as a New York State Brownfield Opportunity Area and an NYC Industrial Business Zone (IBZ), which facilitates sustainable development and infrastructure growth. This status permits companies relocating or expanding within the WSBID to qualify for several financial benefits, including IBZ Relocation Tax Credits worth $1,000 per employee and other incentives through programs like the NYC Relocation Employment Assistance Program (REAP). Tax credits can accumulate to a maximum of $100,000 based on the company’s relocation costs, providing a significant incentive for businesses aiming to establish or expand operations in the area.

The WSBID not only supports companies with essential infrastructure but also encourages active involvement from business owners through its Board and various committees. This collaborative approach ensures that the future development of the district aligns with the needs and interests of the businesses that operate there, creating an environment conducive to growth and innovation.

Complementing the initiatives at the WSBID is the NYC Industrial Plan, which aims to bolster the modern industrial economy across all five boroughs of the city. This plan, expected to be completed by the end of the year, will provide recommendations for improving land use, updating policies, and attracting new investments, further enhancing the industrial landscape of New York City and particularly the Staten Island area.

The WSBID’s strategic location on the East Coast, paired with global connectivity and local incentives, positions it as an appealing site for industrial enterprises. Businesses that are interested in exploring opportunities in the district can reach out to the SIEDC Vice President of Economic Development, Eli Khazzam, for site visits or additional information regarding potential relocation.

As the West Shore Business Improvement District continues to evolve within the framework of Staten Island’s waterfront transformation, it stands as a promising facet of the broader industrial economy in New York City, offering businesses a chance to thrive in a developing and supportive environment.
