Campaign activities in New York City for mayoral race

News Summary

Key contributions include $250,000 from Suffolk Construction and $1 million from DoorDash. Other candidates, including Adrienne Adams, are gaining momentum in the competitive race.

New York City: Super PAC Supporting Andrew Cuomo Raises $10 Million in Mayoral Race

A super PAC supporting Andrew Cuomo in the New York City mayoral race, called “Fix the City,” has raised a staggering $10 million from various business leaders and special interest groups. This financial influx solidifies the PAC’s status as the largest outside spending force in the city’s political history, surpassing previous fundraising records.

Among the notable contributors to this fundraising effort is the head of Suffolk Construction, who contributed $250,000. This company is looking to expand its operations within New York City. Additionally, the chairman of Vornado Realty Trust donated $150,000, motivated by interest in reviving a stalled redevelopment project located in Midtown Manhattan. The food delivery company DoorDash also made a significant contribution of $1 million, as it actively lobbies City Hall on regulatory issues that could impact its business model.

With the newfound funding, “Fix the City” has also outspent other campaigns on advertisements in the current mayoral race, showcasing its substantial financial backing compared to rival candidates. The next largest candidate super PAC, which supports Assemblyman Zohran Mamdani, has only raised 1/50th of the funds that “Fix the City” has collected.

Current Polling and Campaign Dynamics

Polling data reveals that Cuomo currently holds a less than 10-point lead over Mamdani, with Cuomo receiving 35% of first-choice votes compared to Mamdani’s 23%. When simulating ranked-choice voting, Cuomo comes out ahead with 54% against Mamdani’s 46%. A prior poll conducted by Marist University indicated that, in a final round, Cuomo would lead with 53% to Mamdani’s 29%.

The implications of Cuomo’s super PAC fundraising have led to complications with his campaign’s public matching funds. The NYC Campaign Finance Board has docked Cuomo’s campaign twice in recent weeks due to alleged illegal coordination with the super PAC, resulting in a loss of over $1.3 million in public matching funds.

Supporting Candidates and Changing Race Dynamics

In the final weeks of the campaign, City Council Speaker Adrienne Adams qualified for $2.4 million in public matching funds, which will bolster her campaign as she aims to challenge Cuomo. Additionally, Zohran Mamdani, who is 33 years old and the youngest candidate in the race, is gaining momentum, largely thanks to a strong social media presence that resonates with younger voters.

Support for Cuomo has also dwindled due to endorsements for alternative candidates from public advocate Jumaane Williams. Williams has publicly endorsed both Brad Lander and Adrienne Adams, potentially shifting the dynamics of the race as these endorsements aim to create a viable alternative to Cuomo’s candidacy.

As the mayoral race continues to unfold, the ramifications of financial backing and public support will play a crucial role in determining which candidates emerge as the frontrunners in the competitive landscape of New York City politics.
