A motorcade navigates through a picturesque Scottish landscape during Trump's visit.
US President Donald Trump visited Scotland, primarily to oversee his golf clubs, while making headlines with remarks on illegal immigration and environmental issues. Despite a warm welcome from supporters, protests marked his arrival. Trump’s itinerary includes meetings with European leaders and discussions on trade, overshadowed by the criticism of his costly trip and unpopular views among Scots. Polls indicate a significant number of Scots view him unfavorably, which may impact the atmosphere of his stay.
Glasgow, Scotland – US President Donald Trump arrived in Scotland for a four-day visit, landing at Glasgow Prestwick airport shortly before 8:30 PM on Friday. The purpose of his visit is primarily to oversee his two golf clubs located in Aberdeen and Ayrshire. Upon his arrival, Trump was welcomed by a large crowd of supporters, as well as Scottish Secretary Ian Murray.
During his visit, Trump issued a stark warning to European leaders about illegal immigration, describing it as an “invasion” that is “killing Europe.” He urged these leaders to “get your act together” in managing immigration effectively. The President claimed that there were no individuals entering the US last month owing to the stringent immigration policies his administration has implemented.
Trump praised certain European leaders for their efforts against illegal immigration but did not specify who these leaders were. His remarks were echoed by former UK Prime Minister Liz Truss, who expressed her support for Trump’s stance on immigration.
The President is scheduled to begin his day at the Turnberry golf club and also plans to inaugurate a new golf course in Aberdeenshire, which he has dedicated in honor of his mother. His visit includes a meeting with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen on Sunday to discuss trade matters. On Monday, he is expected to meet UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, whom he referred to as a “good man,” and will discuss the ongoing UK-US trade relationship.
Trump’s motorcade, comprising over two dozen vehicles, was escorted by Police Scotland and passed by a small group of protesters. Major security measures are in place for his visit, described as one of the largest operations in Scotland since the death of Queen Elizabeth II, involving over 5,000 police and security personnel. Protests against Trump’s visit have been organized by the Stop Trump Coalition in various Scottish cities.
The trip is reportedly projected to cost US taxpayers a minimum of $10 million, a figure that is being labeled as one of the priciest golf vacations during his presidency. Discussions surrounding the environmental impact of wind energy were also brought up by Trump, who criticized renewable wind power, stating that it is “killing the beauty” of Europe. He urged for a halt to further windmill installations, claiming that the presence of wind turbines in Scotland is “ruining your beautiful fields and valleys.”
In his commentary on immigration, Trump emphasized the success of his administration’s policies, contrasting them with those in Europe by claiming that “this immigration is killing Europe.” Despite the largely private nature of this trip as reported by US media, the White House has classified it as a “working trip.”
Trump is optimistic about the potential for a trade deal between the US and Europe, stating there is a “good 50/50 chance” of reaching an agreement which he labeled as potentially the “biggest deal of them all.” He is expected to return to the UK for a state visit in September.
Although Trump experienced a reception of support from some upon his arrival, polls reveal that over 70% of Scots view him unfavorably. This public sentiment may shape the overall atmosphere of his visit and forthcoming engagements in the region.
