New York – Two teenage girls were shot, and a third was stabbed amid violence that erupted following Pride celebrations near the historic Stonewall Inn in Greenwich Village on Sunday night. The shootings, which took place shortly before 10:15 p.m., were linked to a confrontation between rival groups of teenagers.

The shooting began when a 16-year-old girl, armed with a 9-millimeter pistol, fired at a specific male target in close proximity to him, only inches away from his head. Although the intended target was unharmed, one of the stray bullets struck a bystander, a 17-year-old girl celebrating Pride, in the left thigh. The bullet subsequently lodged in her right thigh. Thankfully, her injuries were classified as non-life-threatening, and she was promptly transported to a hospital for treatment.

Following the initial shooting, as the group fled the scene, another male associated with the shooter discharged several rounds into the surrounding crowd and accidentally hit the original shooter, a 16-year-old girl, in the head. She sustained critical injuries and was placed in police custody at a local hospital, but authorities indicated that she was not expected to be able to communicate at that time.

Police confirmed that the violence was not related to the Pride events and was not classified as a hate crime. A total of six gunshots were reported, causing damage to food carts and nearby buildings. Authorities recovered a weapon believed to belong to the 16-year-old shooter at the scene, but specifics regarding the weapon used by the male shooter remain uncertain.

In another troubling aspect of the night, another 17-year-old girl, who was part of the initial shooter’s group, arrived at Bellevue Hospital with a stab wound to her abdomen. Details surrounding her injuries are currently under investigation.

Mayor Eric Adams expressed sadness over the incident and called for swift action from the New York Police Department (NYPD) to bring those responsible to justice. Governor Kathy Hochul condemned the violence, emphasizing the importance of safety and offering assistance in the investigation.

The chaotic atmosphere of the night was exacerbated by an earlier incident earlier in Washington Square Park, where six individuals were injured due to bear spray. This incident resulted in a suspect being charged with multiple offenses, further intensifying tensions during the Pride celebrations.

This series of violent events following such a celebrated occasion highlights ongoing issues concerning safety and conflict among youth, raising concerns within the community and among officials. The NYPD is actively investigating both incidents as they strive to ensure public safety during large gatherings.

As authorities continue to gather information and witness accounts, the community is left reeling from the violence that marred an otherwise joyous celebration.
