New York State has allocated $2.5 million for a new snow control center at Syracuse Hancock International Airport, complementing the recent completion of a $28.4 million expansion. Additional funding was announced for several airports across Central New York, further supporting transportation infrastructure improvements throughout the state.
New York — New York State has earmarked $2.5 million for a new snow control center at Syracuse Hancock International Airport, as part of a broader initiative to enhance airport facilities across the state. This funding is in addition to a $20 million allocation from the Upstate Airport Economic Development and Revitalization competition, contributing to ongoing expansion efforts at the airport.
The recent expansion project at Syracuse Hancock International Airport, which was completed at a total cost of approximately $28.4 million, included numerous upgrades. These enhancements feature a new north concourse, increased seating capacity, expanded concession areas, and improved overall passenger flow. Additionally, the terminal building’s second floor, particularly around gate 15, saw renovations that expanded the size of the Federal Inspection Station facility. This phase of the project added more than 4,000 square feet to the north concourse, which now accommodates about 40% of the annual passenger traffic at the airport.
Governor Kathy Hochul announced the state’s ongoing airport investments during her visit to Syracuse, highlighting the importance of airports in New York for local economic growth and tourism. The governor noted that many upstate airports are underappreciated compared to their New York City counterparts, which can detract from their importance to regional development.
In conjunction with the funding for the snow control center, additional allocations were announced for other airports across Central New York and statewide. Notably, Griffiss International Airport in Rome will receive $2.3 million to construct a new sand and salt storage building. Other funding includes $1.94 million for Akron Airport to build a solar-powered hangar and $2.5 million for Buffalo Niagara International Airport to expand their deicing fluid collection system.
