The expo, attended by fourteen prominent Indian travel trade professionals, provided a three-day immersive experience aimed at fostering business collaboration and cultural understanding. Over thirty member businesses participated, showcasing a variety of well-known NYC attractions alongside newer experiences from all five boroughs: Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, The Bronx, and Staten Island.
Central to the event was a series of one-on-one meetings between Indian travel leaders and local tourism representatives. This interactive component aimed to delve into potential collaborations and integrate tourism products for future itineraries, effectively laying the groundwork for ongoing partnerships.
The expo included numerous experiential highlights for the visiting Indian professionals. Notable moments included a private screening of “Encounters in the Milky Way” at the esteemed American Museum of Natural History, an exclusive Broadway Night featuring interactive Q&A sessions with cast members from popular shows like “Aladdin” and “The Lion King,” and a unique behind-the-scenes “Wild Encounter” at the Bronx Zoo, where participants could engage up close with animals such as a sloth and an armadillo.
This inaugural event comes at a time when New York City is witnessing a surge in tourism. In 2024, the city welcomed a record 64.5 million visitors, nearly reaching 97% of its tourism numbers prior to the pandemic. Specifically, Indian tourist arrivals have seen a remarkable rise, with 419,000 visitors recorded in 2024—a 24.7% increase from 336,000 in 2023. This trend underscores India’s growing role in NYC’s tourism landscape.
The surge in visitors from India can be attributed to multiple factors, including rising disposable incomes among Indian travelers, a younger demographic eager for international experiences, and an increase in direct flights connecting major Indian cities to New York. NYC holds a reputation as the foremost entry point for international visitors to the United States, facilitated by the world’s busiest airport system.
City officials view the India Business Expo as a foundational step toward nurturing future relationships with India’s travel industry.
