NEW YORK, N.Y. — Early in-person voting got underway Saturday across New York, and some city polling places stayed busy right up to the 5 p.m. close, including a line that stretched out the door at the American Museum of Natural History on the Upper West Side.

Voters have nine days to cast ballots before Election Day on Tuesday, Nov. 3. The early period is meant to give people more flexibility and shorten lines on the day itself. Sites are open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 25, and Monday, Oct. 26, then switch to 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Tuesday and Wednesday. Thursday, Oct. 29, runs from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., and the final three days, Oct. 30 through Nov. 1, return to 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

New Yorkers can also vote by mail. Anyone who wants a mail ballot must ask the Board of Elections for one at least 10 days before Election Day.

The governor’s race sits at the top of the ballot. Gov. Kathy Hochul and Republican challenger Bruce Blakeman spent the opening day campaigning at opposite ends of the state. Hochul pointed to what she called five years of results for New Yorkers, while Blakeman argued that families will not be better off unless voters replace the governor. Recent polls have shown Hochul with a double-digit lead.

Mayor Zohran Mamdani, who has endorsed Hochul, cast his ballot at the Met art museum, drawing both cheers and heckling on his way in. Asked about the five citywide ballot proposals, the mayor said he would not tell anyone how to vote but that he personally marked yes on all five. He also said he looks forward to seeing the governor win another term.
