NEW YORK, N.Y. — Four people, one of them a firefighter, were injured Friday afternoon when a fire swept through a residential building at 3408 Wright Avenue in the northeast Bronx, the New York City Fire Department said.
Crews were called to the address, close to Tillotson Avenue, a little before 12:45 p.m. Within about 20 minutes the response had grown to three alarms. Fire officials said the flames began on an upper floor and worked their way into the space beneath the roof, which is often the hardest part of a building for firefighters to reach. Video recorded by people nearby showed bright orange flames pushing out of the structure while heavy smoke rolled across the surrounding blocks.
Emergency medical crews took all four injured people to hospitals. The department described at least some of the injuries as minor and did not release names.
The building sits on the line between the Eastchester and Baychester sections of the borough, a largely residential area of apartment houses and private homes. Families who lived in the building were left to find somewhere else to stay, and some spent the night in a hotel. The American Red Cross sent workers to the scene to help displaced tenants with immediate needs.
The department did not say Friday what started the fire. Fire marshals with the city typically examine a scene after a blaze of this size to determine where and how it began.
Residents who need help after a fire can contact the Red Cross for emergency lodging, food and clothing.
