NEW YORK, N.Y. — A Halloween party for kids outside a Brooklyn police station in New York turned to chaos Thursday afternoon when a driver ran up onto the sidewalk and plowed into the crowd, injuring six people, three of them children, the New York City Police Department said.
The crash happened at about 3:54 p.m. on Bleecker Street near Knickerbocker Avenue in Bushwick, right outside the 83rd Precinct, where officers were hosting a Trunk-or-Treat with candy, a DJ, costumes and decorated patrol cars. A black sedan came down the block, jumped the curb, struck the pedestrians and then crashed into an ambulance parked at the event.
The children hurt were 6, 8 and 11. The adults were women ages 31, 58 and 74. They were taken to Wyckoff Heights Medical Center, Bellevue Hospital and Elmhurst Hospital, and police said all six were in stable condition.
The 56-year-old driver and a passenger were both taken into custody. Police sources said he had been drinking. One source put his blood alcohol reading at 0.264, a level well over triple what state law allows behind the wheel. No charges had been announced Thursday night.
The precinct event was one of many neighborhood Halloween gatherings planned around the city before the holiday on Saturday.
Trunk-or-Treat events let families collect candy from decorated car trunks in one closed-off spot instead of going door to door, and police precincts across the five boroughs host them each fall as a way to meet neighbors. Investigators were still working Thursday night to piece together how the sedan ended up on the sidewalk, and the department had not released the names of the driver or the passenger.
