Engaged citizens in New York City during the heated mayoral race
In the competitive race for New York City’s mayor, Assembly Member Zohran Mamdani leads with 40% support in a recent poll, outpacing former Governor Andrew Cuomo at 24%. Mayor Eric Adams and Republican Curtis Sliwa follow at 15% and 14% respectively. Mamdani, with a 49-40 favorability rating, has garnered notable endorsements from labor unions, while Cuomo prepares for an independent campaign. The dynamic political landscape and engaging voter base signal an intriguing election ahead.
New York City is witnessing a competitive mayoral race as Assembly Member Zohran Mamdani takes the lead with 40% support, according to a recent poll conducted by Data for Progress. This prominent position comes as former Governor Andrew Cuomo launches an independent campaign and is currently polling in second place with 24% support.
In a surprising turn of events, Mayor Eric Adams trails in third place with 15%, followed closely by Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa at 14%. Independent candidate Jim Walden polls at just 1%, while 5% of respondents remain undecided.
Mamdani, a 33-year-old Democratic primary victor, boasts the highest favorability rating among the candidates at 49-40, being the only candidate with an overall positive rating. Comparatively, Cuomo’s favorability stands at 39-59, Adams’ at 29-70, Sliwa’s at 32-50, and Walden’s at 9-15. Notably, Mamdani’s favorability rating surpasses that of the overall Democratic Party, which scores even at 49-49.
The poll reflects Mamdani’s strong backing from progressive and younger voters, aiding him in his primary win over Cuomo by a significant margin of 12%. This result came as a surprise to many observers, as earlier predictions favored Cuomo.
Cuomo is expected to formally announce his independent campaign soon, where he will indicate his intention to withdraw if he does not lead among challengers to Mamdani by early September. Recently, he acknowledged that he underestimated Mamdani’s campaign efforts in the primary and admitted a lack of engagement with his proposals.
After a previous indictment relating to campaign fraud was dismissed in April, Adams announced his re-election bid as an independent candidate. The poll indicates that Adams is gaining traction among Republican voters with his centrist approach.
Mamdani has attracted significant support from labor unions, securing endorsements from major organizations such as DC37, the largest municipal labor union in New York City, as well as the city’s teachers’ union, the Hotel Trades Council, the New York State Nurses Association, SEIU 32BJ, and the New York City Central Labor Council.
Throughout his campaign, Mamdani has highlighted issues like the high cost of living that affects working-class New Yorkers, focusing on affordability as a central theme.
Meanwhile, Cuomo has attempted to reshape his image through social media platforms, adopting a more upbeat persona and releasing a promotional video that mimics Mamdani’s campaign style. President Donald Trump has publicly criticized Mamdani, labeling him as a “Communist” and suggesting that Cuomo could potentially defeat him in the election.
Mamdani is actively engaging with influential business leaders in New York City, prompting questions regarding his ability to earn the confidence of the establishment while maintaining his progressive stance.
The ongoing poll indicates that across a broader voter base, Mamdani currently holds a 35% support rate, compared to Cuomo’s 25%. Adams and Sliwa continue to trail with lower polling numbers, highlighting the dynamic nature of this mayoral contest.
As the 2025 New York City mayoral race progresses, the candidates are positioning themselves strategically to capture the attention and votes of the electorate, making for an intriguing political landscape in the upcoming months.
