The Central New York Community Foundation has appointed Angela Lee and H. Douglas Pinckney as new board members to enhance community engagement and governance. Both will begin their three-year terms in 2025. In addition, there has been a surge in local business activity with 25 new businesses registered, indicating positive economic development in the region. Notable developments include plans for the redevelopment of the former Crucible steel plant and the appointment of Sol Muñoz as senior public information officer.
Syracuse, New York – The Central New York Community Foundation has appointed two new board members, Angela Lee and H. Douglas Pinckney, furthering their commitment to enhancing community engagement and governance. Both members will begin their three-year terms on July 1, 2025.
Angela Lee currently serves as the chief diversity officer at Baxter International, Inc., while H. Douglas Pinckney is a partner and co-founder of the Pinckney Hugo Group, an established firm in the Syracuse area. Their appointments are expected to bring valuable insights and leadership to the foundation, which plays a crucial role in philanthropic efforts and community support across the region.
In addition to these appointments, the past week has seen a surge in local business activity. A total of 25 new businesses were registered across Onondaga, Cayuga, Cortland, and Madison counties from June 23 to June 27. Onondaga County notably recorded seven of these new filings, reflecting a positive trend in local economic development.
Among the newly registered businesses, diverse sectors are represented, including custom jewelry, painting and renovation services, as well as retail outlets. This variety indicates a dynamic business landscape emerging in the local economy, fostering innovation and job creation.
Moreover, the former Crucible steel plant, which is located near the New York State Fairgrounds and spans an area of 70 acres, is poised for redevelopment. The site’s new owner, Ross Castner, plans to restart some furnaces and develop parts of the location into a hotel or brewery. This initiative promises to revitalize the area while promoting tourism and local employment opportunities.
In other local developments, Syracuse Mayor Ben Walsh has appointed Sol Muñoz as the senior public information officer within the city’s office of communications. Muñoz will handle responsibilities related to public policy communications, media relations, digital content development, and community outreach initiatives.
With a strong background in municipal communications, Muñoz previously served as the infrastructure public information officer, where she managed communications for the public works, engineering, and water departments. Her experience includes overseeing significant infrastructure projects, managing communications related to trash and recycling systems, sidewalk rehabilitation projects, snow removal initiatives, and coordinating information surrounding the Interstate 81 construction.
Muñoz holds a master’s degree in entrepreneurship and emerging enterprises from Syracuse University and a bachelor’s degree from Ithaca College with a minor in Latin American studies. She also possesses an international baccalaureate bilingual diploma in both English and Spanish, enhancing her capacity to connect with diverse community members.
The collective establishment of new businesses, alongside the strategic appointments in municipal leadership, illustrates a period of growth and transformation within Syracuse. As the community continues to evolve, these developments aim to enrich local initiatives and bolster the economic environment across Central New York.
