New York State Announces $2.2 Billion Tax Relief for Homeowners

News Summary

New York State will distribute $2.2 billion in tax relief to eligible homeowners this summer, as part of the STAR program. Homeowners and seniors will receive checks ranging from $350 to $1,500 based on income levels. The initiative is set to assist over 450,000 middle-class families, including expanded child tax credits and plans for free school meals. This financial aid aims to alleviate the economic burden before the school tax deadlines.

New York State will distribute $2.2 billion in tax relief to eligible homeowners this summer and fall, as announced by Governor Hochul. The relief is part of the New York State School Tax Relief (STAR) program, which provides tax exemptions aimed at reducing school tax bills for homeowners and seniors. These tax relief checks are expected to be sent out within the week and should arrive before the school tax deadline, offering vital financial relief to residents across the state.

Homeowners with incomes below $500,000 can expect checks ranging from $350 to $600. Seniors with incomes below $107,300 will see a more significant benefit, with checks between $700 and $1,500. In the Finger Lakes region alone, around 279,000 homeowners are anticipated to benefit from these checks, totaling approximately $205.2 million in relief.

Checks for major school districts, including the Rochester City School District, will be issued over the next three weeks. Residents within the Rochester district can expect their checks to arrive within the next two weeks, helping alleviate some of the financial burdens ahead of the school tax payment deadline.

In addition to the STAR program, the state will also implement an inflation refund check program projected for distribution in the fall. This initiative aims to address the rising living costs due to inflation and will return a total of $2 billion to New York taxpayers. Joint tax filers earning up to $150,000 will receive $400, while those with incomes between $150,000 and $300,000 will receive $300. Single tax filers with incomes up to $75,000 are set to receive $200 checks, and those earning between $75,000 and $150,000 will receive $150.

Furthermore, the budget includes an expansion of New York’s child tax credit. Families with children aged 0 to 3 years will now receive $1,000 instead of $330, while families with children aged 4 to 16 will get $500 per child compared to the previous $330.

New York State is making strides to offer free school meals to all children, which can save families approximately $1,600 per child annually. These financial initiatives are designed to assist over 450,000 middle-class families in the Finger Lakes region alone, ensuring that more than 100,000 families will benefit from the expanded child tax credit.

The STAR benefit program allows eligible homeowners to receive a break on their school property taxes. This can be in the form of a direct exemption on tax bills or a credit that comes as a check. For quicker payments, homeowners can enroll in the STAR Credit Direct Deposit program, although there are specific stipulations regarding the timing of enrollment. Homeowners transitioning between exemption and credit/check formats may see annual increases in their STAR credit values.

Approximately 2.26 million New Yorkers are expected to benefit from the STAR program, with 670,000 residents receiving Enhanced STAR benefits in 2022. This relief initiative is critical in providing financial stability and easing the burden for homeowners amidst the ongoing economic challenges. The provision of these funds demonstrates New York State’s commitment to supporting its residents through effective tax relief measures.
