Diverse cannabis products available in New York's legal market.
Recent data from the New York State Department of Health reveals a significant rise in cannabis use among adults post-legalization. With approximately 2 million adults reporting use within 30 days, trends show a notable shift towards recreational consumption, particularly among the LGBTQ community and younger demographics. The popularity of smoking has declined, giving way to increased vaping and the consumption of cannabis-infused products. State health officials stress the importance of responsible use and safety considerations as cannabis becomes more integrated into social norms.
In 2023, a significant portion of New York’s adult population has turned to cannabis, with approximately 2 million adults—around 15% of the state’s adult population—reporting use of cannabis products within a 30-day period. This marks a notable increase of 400,000 adults when compared to the 2020 data, just prior to the legalization of cannabis for non-medical use in the state.
The findings are based on data released by the New York State Department of Health, which has been monitoring cannabis use trends since legalization in 2021. The state’s legalization of recreational cannabis followed extensive advocacy by criminal justice reform groups and included measures aimed at addressing past marijuana-related convictions.
Since the legalization, there has been a rise in the number of unlicensed cannabis retailers, which has prompted state officials to take action in regulating the emerging recreational cannabis market. This spike in cannabis use comes alongside an increase in vaping trends, particularly among the youth.
A closer look at demographic differences reveals interesting shifts in cannabis consumption among the LGBTQ community, where over 35% reported using cannabis in the last 30 days in 2023, up from 27% in 2020. Additionally, there has been a marked change in consumption methods among users. Though smoking remains the dominant method of consumption, its popularity has seen a decline, with the percentage of users who smoke dropping from about 75% in 2020 to 62% in 2023.
On the other hand, the method of vaping has gained appeal, increasing from just 9% to over 16% over the same period. Furthermore, the consumption of cannabis-infused food products has risen notably, with users reporting an increase from 12% to 18%.
Understanding the motivations behind consumption indicates a shift in how cannabis is utilized. Data suggests that more than half of cannabis users are engaging with the substance for non-medical reasons. Comparatively, only 15% indicated they were using cannabis solely for medical purposes, which represents a drop from 19.3% in 2020. This trend showcases a greater inclination towards recreational use as the norm.
When looking at age demographics, adults aged 21 to 24 reflect the highest rates of cannabis consumption compared to other age groups. This pattern highlights the changing landscape of cannabis use in the younger population, which coincides with a rise in e-cigarette use among high school students and young adults.
In light of the increasing cannabis consumption, state health officials are emphasizing the importance of responsible use. They advise that cannabis products, particularly those that may be appealing to children or pets, should be stored safely and securely. This guidance underscores the need for awareness and safety, especially as more residents engage with legal cannabis products.
The 2023 report from the New York State Department of Health marks a clear transition in cannabis consumption patterns following legalization. With rising numbers of users and evolving preferences in consumption methods, ongoing efforts to regulate the industry and promote health awareness are crucial to ensure safe practices for all New Yorkers.
