The JFK AirTrain station, bustling with travelers amidst ongoing renovations.
Starting June 30, the JFK AirTrain fare will be halved from $8.50 to $4.25 until Labor Day. The Port Authority aims to reduce road traffic during significant airport renovations projected to handle over 18 million passengers this summer. With ongoing construction causing congestion, the fare discount encourages more travelers to utilize public transit. New tap-to-pay systems are being implemented to enhance efficiency as the airport prepares for increased travel volume, particularly during the July 4 holiday. This initiative aims to create a smoother travel experience for both commuters and tourists.
New York – The fare for the JFK AirTrain will be reduced by 50%, from $8.50 to $4.25, starting June 30 and continuing until Labor Day. This significant fare cut is designed to alleviate road traffic during peak construction periods at JFK Airport, which is undergoing a major renovation project.
The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey announced the fare reduction, highlighting the expected surge in travel this summer, with projections of 18.3 million passengers passing through JFK Airport. The airport’s ongoing $19 billion renovation has contributed to increased congestion, making the AirTrain a more appealing option for travelers.
The fare discount applies to access at both Jamaica and Howard Beach stations, providing seamless connections to the subway and the Long Island Rail Road. By encouraging the use of public transit, the Port Authority aims to minimize traffic congestion around the airport, especially as construction continues to impact access to terminals.
Particular emphasis has been placed on Terminal 7, which is expected to be challenging to reach due to the ongoing roadway construction. Port Authority officials are promoting the AirTrain as a more efficient transportation solution during this busy travel period.
In addition to the fare reduction, new OMNY tap-to-pay readers have been installed at the AirTrain turnstiles; however, they have encountered some operational challenges. To manage crowding during peak hours, the Port Authority will keep the fare gates open intentionally, while security personnel will be stationed at AirTrain stations to enforce fare payment and ensure a smooth passenger flow.
Travelers opting to drive can take advantage of free short-term parking at the Lefferts Boulevard station, which offers a free AirTrain ride to the terminals, taking approximately eight minutes. The Port Authority is also predicting a significant increase in passenger traffic during the July 4 travel period, estimating that more than 5.5 million travelers will use its facilities, setting a record for that holiday timeframe.
This fare reduction initiative is a proactive step by the Port Authority to enhance travel efficiency and encourage the use of public transport, particularly during a period marked by extensive construction and high passenger volumes. With the summer travel season upon us, airport officials hope this will contribute to a smoother travel experience for both commuters and tourists alike.
