Students at a New York City school engaging in activities to celebrate Eid al-Adha.
New York City Public Schools will close on June 5 to observe Eid al-Adha, with a clerical day on June 6 resulting in no classes for younger grades. High school students may be excused to observe the holiday. The Department of Education ensures transportation for eligible students and provides meal options for the following week, highlighting their commitment to inclusivity in recognizing diverse cultural practices within the school system.
New York City Public Schools adjusted their schedule to accommodate the observance of Eid al-Adha, closing schools on Thursday, June 5, 2025, for the holiday. The following day, Friday, June 6, was designated as a clerical day, resulting in no classes for public 3K, Pre-K, elementary, middle, and K-12 schools, including standalone D75 programs. However, high schools and grades 6-12 remained open on June 6, and students from these grades may be excused from class to observe the holiday.
While all other public schools continued their operations as usual that day, the New York City Department of Education (DOE) provided arrangements for transportation for eligible students through the city’s transportation system. On June 6, alternate side parking was suspended, although sanitation collection remained on schedule, allowing for regular waste disposal services.
The NYC school calendar for the 2024-2025 academic year commenced on Thursday, September 5, 2024. School officials stated that the last day of school for students is set for Thursday, June 26, 2025. The academic schedule is structured to include federal holidays and approximately a dozen non-public holidays, along with regular events such as parent-teacher conferences, professional development days, and clerical days.
According to the school calendar, federal holidays falling on a Saturday will not be observed on a weekday, while those that occur on Sundays will be observed the following Monday. Similarly, non-public holidays that fall on weekends are not observed during the school week. Regents Exams are scheduled to take place in both January and June.
The DOE continues to offer transportation options for eligible students, including stop-to-school bus service and free subway rides. Eligibility for bus service depends on several factors, including grade level, distance from school, housing status, and any accommodations specified in Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) or Section 504 Plans. Eligible students receive OMNY cards, granting them four rides per day at any time during the day or night, a change from the previous system that provided MetroCards with three rides per day during limited hours.
Looking ahead, students will have meal options on Monday, June 9, with breakfast choices including either “Chef Choice” or banana breakfast bread accompanied by a mozzarella cheese stick and fruit. For lunch, options will include “Chef Choice” or personal pizza served with roasted carrots, frozen fruit cups, salad, and access to a pizza bar, maintaining the tradition of varied food offerings for students during the academic year.
The recent adjustment in scheduling reflects a clerical error concerning the observance of Eid al-Adha. The city’s officials underscore the importance of recognizing diverse cultural practices and ensuring accommodations for students observing religious holidays. For students in grades 6-12, flexible attendance policies have been put in place to allow for late arrivals, early departures, or excusal from absences altogether.
New York City’s approach aims to support inclusiveness and respect for various traditions, while also maintaining the educational integrity and schedules of its schools. The DOE’s commitment to provide appropriate resources for all students remains a priority as they navigate the complexities of a diverse urban school environment.
