The New York Mets' home stadium, a hub for sports and community initiatives.
The New York Mets have appointed Lew Sherr as the new president of business operations, effective July 2025. Sherr, currently the CEO of the USTA, will focus on enhancing the Mets’ business amid significant organizational changes following the exit of several high-ranking officials. His leadership aims to boost the team’s operational efficiency and community engagement, particularly with upcoming plans for an entertainment district next to Citi Field. The Mets strive for a renewed strategic direction under owner Steve Cohen.
New York – The New York Mets have appointed Lew Sherr as the new president of business operations, following his tenure with the U.S. Tennis Association (USTA) where he served as CEO and executive director since 2022. Sherr will officially join the Mets in July 2025, while continuing his role at the USTA until the end of June 2025. His immediate focus will be on enhancing the Mets’ business operations, amid a backdrop of significant organizational changes.
Sherr’s recruitment comes on the heels of the Mets’ announcement regarding the departure of Scott Havens, the previous president of business operations, who held the role for just over a year. The Mets are currently undergoing a substantial restructuring as other high-ranking officials including chief legal officer Katie Pothier, chief marketing officer Andy Goldberg, chief communications officer Nancy Elder, and senior vice president of finance Peter Woll have also left the organization since November. This shift in leadership signals a renewed strategic direction under the ownership of Steve and Alex Cohen.
Expressing enthusiasm about his new role, Sherr acknowledged the “unmatched commitment” the Cohen family has shown toward the Mets. He also emphasized the positive energy surrounding the team and its initiatives within the community. A focal point for the organization’s future under Sherr’s leadership will be the planned development of a casino, hotel, and entertainment district adjacent to Citi Field, the Mets’ home stadium. Steve Cohen is actively pursuing three casino licenses from the New York State Gaming Commission while also advocating for the reclassification of surrounding land from parkland to commercial use, which is seen as critical for the gaming facility’s realization.
During his time at the USTA, where he began in 2010 as the chief revenue officer, Sherr successfully spearheaded initiatives that led to increased tennis participation across the United States, significant rises in attendance and sponsorships, and elevated revenue from the U.S. Open. Notably, he was involved in a recent $800 million project intended to enhance Arthur Ashe Stadium and establish a player performance center at the U.S. Open venue. His efforts also included changes to the U.S. Open mixed doubles event that aimed to attract top singles players, reflecting a commitment to innovative growth within the sport.
Sherr has expressed bittersweet feelings about leaving the USTA, highlighting the value he placed on his 15-year association with the organization. He has indicated that he looks forward to the challenges and opportunities that await him with the Mets, especially in light of the organizational overhaul currently underway. As he steps into this new role, Sherr’s experience in management and strategic development is expected to play a crucial role in shaping the Mets’ future.
The decision to bring Sherr on board comes as the Mets continue to navigate the competitive landscape of Major League Baseball, and seek to boost their business operations in several key areas. By leveraging Sherr’s background and expertise, the organization aims not only to enhance team performance but also to strengthen its community ties and commercial prospects.
As the Mets prepare for Sherr’s arrival, they look to engage fans and stakeholders in a meaningful way, fostering a sense of unity and ambition for the seasons ahead. The changes taking place within the organization reflect a broader strategy to position the Mets as a formidable force in both the sporting world and the community.
