Students at NYU graduation reacting to a controversial speech.
New York University has decided to withhold the diploma of Logan Rozos after a controversial graduation speech where he accused the U.S. of supporting genocide in Gaza. Rozos’s remarks drew mixed reactions, as he condemned the violence in Palestine and suggested U.S. tax dollars were funding the conflict. Following the speech, NYU administration expressed their disapproval and announced disciplinary action against him, highlighting the ongoing debates about free expression and political activism at universities amid rising tensions concerning the Israel-Gaza conflict.
New York City – New York University (NYU) has withheld the diploma of Logan Rozos, who delivered a controversial graduation speech accusing the United States of supporting “genocide” in Gaza. This incident occurred during the Gallatin School’s graduation ceremony on Wednesday.
During his speech, Rozos condemned what he termed the “atrocities currently happening in Palestine” and labeled the ongoing violence in Gaza as genocide. He emphasized that this situation is politically and militarily supported by the United States, implying U.S. tax dollars are partially financing the conflict. His address elicited mixed reactions from the audience, including both cheers and boos, while some classmates showed their approval through applause.
An NYU spokesperson responded to Rozos’s remarks, accusing him of deviating from his prepared speech and violating university protocols. The administration expressed it was “deeply sorry” regarding the speech, emphasizing that Rozos had disrespected the privilege granted to him as the student speaker. As a result, the university is pursuing disciplinary measures against him and withholding his diploma until further actions are resolved.
This decision by NYU comes amid heightened scrutiny of pro-Palestinian activism at U.S. colleges, particularly under the recent administration that has associated these movements with antisemitism. The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) denounced Rozos’s speech, branding it divisive, and communicated gratitude towards the university for its condemnation of his sentiments.
Rozos, noted as a student of cultural criticism and political economy at a liberal arts school within NYU, identifies as an “actor, artist, and gay Black trans man.” His selection as the commencement speaker reflects a degree of support for his message among some of his peers. However, this moment of recognition was overshadowed by ensuing calls from pro-Israel groups for the university to take disciplinary action following the widespread sharing of his speech on social media platforms.
NYU’s administration has been facing increased pressure amid rising tensions related to the Israel-Gaza conflict, which has prompted investigations into the university for incidents of antisemitism arising from protests on campus since the beginning of the conflict in October 2023. Over 180 students and faculty members associated with events concerning Gaza violence are currently facing conduct cases initiated by the university.
In a broader context, the Trump administration has threatened federal funding cuts to universities perceived as fostering antisemitism or allowing pro-Palestinian sentiments to flourish unchecked. This pressure has also extended to other institutions like Harvard University, which has faced legal actions regarding similar funding concerns. Notably, several foreign students involved in pro-Palestinian demonstrations have faced detention for allegedly supporting Hamas, igniting discussions regarding free speech on campus.
As the discourse continues, Rozos’s case serves as a focal point for the ongoing debate about the limits of free expression in academic settings and the complexities of political advocacy amid international conflicts. The outcomes of NYU’s disciplinary actions against Rozos may set precedents for how similar issues are handled at other universities across the United States.
