Now, for a building to be eligible for these cabinets, it needs to meet specific criteria: it must have ground-floor commercial space, community facility uses, or a minimum of five residential units.
Property owners and tenants interested in this program need to navigate through a revocable consent process, allowing private entities to place infrastructure on public property. This isn’t just a plug-and-play situation. Every installed cabinet will require an inspection by the FDNY and an electrical permit from the Department of Buildings before things can get rolling.
Now, let’s talk about costs. Applicants will have to pay a $750 filing fee upon application. Once the application receives approval, a security deposit of $3,000 is required, along with approximately $1,250 in additional fees. Yikes, that’s a chunk of change!
After applying, expect a waiting period of about a year for the approval process, but once approved, the permission for these cabinet installations will be valid for a whopping ten years. Interestingly, building owners or tenants may charge users to take advantage of the charging cabinets. Although specific fee regulations are still under discussion by the DOT, one company in partnership with these installations, Swobbee, has announced plans to charge a maximum of $2 per day for unlimited battery swaps.
